Well, they finally did it, after 7 weeks stuck behind Drake in the Number 2 position, "These Days" from Rudimental featuring Jess Glynne & Macklemore hits Number 1 this week. Only one other track in UK chart history has spent as long at Number 2 before hitting Number 1 - "You Belong To Me" by Jo Stafford in 1952/53.
On the very first chart on week ending 15th November 1952, "You Belong To Me" was placed at Number 2 behind Al Martino's "Here In My Heart".
After dropping to Number 5 the following week, it returned to the runner up spot on 29th November 1952, and would stay for another seven weeks, again behind Al Martino, until it spent its only week at Number 1 on 17th January 1953. The 8 weeks it spent at Number 2 in total prior to becoming Number One is an all-time record.
"Little Things Mean A Lot" by Kitty Kallen also spent 7 weeks at Number 2 before hitting Number 1, but not consecutively. It first spent three weeks from 17th July 1954 behind David Whitfield's "Cara Mia", and then another 4 weeks at Number 2 behind the same song from 14th August 1954, until it hit Number 1 for a single week on 11th September 1954.
So here is the record holder, this is Jo Stafford with "You Belong To Me".
